Malaga midfielder Pablo Fornals who was recently linked with a move to Arsenal has joined Villarreal.
The midfielder had a superb season with Malaga last term which led to interest from Arsenal. He was tipped by some fans as a successor to Santi Cazorla who is struggling with injuries but we have now missed out on the player.
According to Costa del Sol News via the Daily Cannon, Fornals have now completed a move to Villarreal after the La Liga side activated his £10.8m release clause.
Malaga owner Sheikh Abdullah bin Nasser El-Thani confirmed the move via Twitter when he revealed they did everything they could to stop the talented playmaker from leaving.
“Whoever says I did not sign the player’s contract is lying,” Al-Thani said, as reported by Costa del Sol News.
“We made two offers to the player with a big salary. But the player as his agent did not accept it.”
Fornals is seen as the heir to Cazorla in the Spanish national team not because they both played for Malaga but because of their almost-alike style of play.
Santi grew into a key player at Arsenal since after he joined from Malaga and some Gooners were hoping Fornals will follow the same path but that isn’t going to be the case.
We may now have to wait a few years before we will see Fornals ply his trade at the Emirates that’s if it is ever going to happen.
