Arsene Wenger is reportedly keen on bolstering his side in the January transfer window for the
second half of the 2015/2016 season.
Arsenal are interested in signing a defensive midfielder and have made Southampton star Victor Wanyama their priority target in January, according to the Metro.
The Metro via the Mirror claims the Southampton midfielder is Wenger’s first choice target as he searches for a replacement for Francis Coquelin who suffered a knee injury in November and has been ruled out of action until the March next year.
The Gunners boss is currently in the market for a defensive midfielder and has been linked with the likes of Lars Bender and William Carvalho.
In an interview in November, Wenger confirmed that he rates Wanyama highly but refuses to comment if his club will move for the midfielder in January or not. Speaking to the press, Wenger said:
“I rate the player, but we are not on the case,” he told a news conference. “We will be out there and seeing what we can do, but we have the whole of December to go and we are in a strong position in the Premier League
“But we are short, and it is important that we don’t lose any more players. On one side, people want you to have seven strikers, on the other side when you rest one they ask you why you are not playing him.”
The Kenyan international has also attracted interest from Tottenham and Chelsea at the past but Arsene Wenger is keen to swoop for the midfielder in January.
