Arsene Wenger had to maintain a firm stand over his decision to keep Alexis Sanchez during a meeting with board members, according to reports.
Sanchez has been heavily linked with a move away from the Emirates all summer but Wenger has been vocal about his desire to keep him here at all cost.
However, it has emerged that the manager and some members of the board weren’t on the same page as regards the striker’s future.
According to the Evening Standard via the Daily Cannon, Arsenal chiefs were willing to let Sanchez leave if it received a bid worth more than £50m but Wenger was determined to keep him at all cost.
Evidently, it was Wenger’s decision that eventually stood after the board decided to back him.
Wenger has publicly insisted he will keep Sanchez here whether he likes it or not and that the player will have to accept that.
It appears Sanchez is doing just that already, after the Mirror some few days back claimed the forward has begun to indicate to his teammates he will remain at the club this season.
Gooners will be excited with how well Wenger has handled the saga but the problem remains the forward’s contract situation.
No one knows if he will decide to extend his contract or leave when his contract expires at the end of the season. Should he decide to take the later decision, Wenger’s insistence on keeping him may become the wrong decision in hindsight. You wouldn’t want to lose your best player for nothing.
