Arsenal are reportedly set to go head-to-head to sign Barcelona youngster Joel Lopez and the Spanish giants are not confident of keeping the academy star.

Barcelona’s La Masia academy has produced dozens of world class talents over a number of decades now.

Lionel Messi is undoubtedly the biggest name to come out of youth set-up but there have also been a number of players who have left Barcelona to go on and make a career elsewhere.

Pepe Reina and Luis Garcia both graduated from the academy and went on to forge careers outside of Spain.

And there could be another set to swap the famous academy for the English top flight.

That’s according to Spanish publication Sport, who claim Lopez is expected to leave Barcelona in the summer.

Arsenal are said to be leading the race for his signature.

The Nou Camp outfit recently lost 17-year-old Sergio Gomez to Borussia Dortmund and they are concerned more could follow him out the door.

The report claims Barcelona officials have desperately called up parents of their current academy players in the hope of getting them to sign extensions.

But Lopez is yet to commit his future to the club with his contract running out at the end of the season.
