According to Daily Star, Arsenal will not be able to sign Chelsea’s demoted goalkeeper, Petr Cech, as the Blues look to let go of third choice stopper, Mark Schwarzer.
Schwarzer, 42, has been a peripheral figure at Stamford Bridge since moving from Fulham in 2012 but the arrival of Thibaut Courtois has pushed him further down the pecking order, and with a deal for him now agreed to join Leicester City till the end of the season, it doesn’t appear likely that Cech will be going anywhere.
Cech has been the undisputed first-choice goalkeeper at Chelsea for over a decade, right from the first Mourinho era in 2004, but Courtois’s refusal to return to Stamford Bridge from his third-loan spell at Atletico Madrid, as a back-up to anyone put pressure on Mourinho to axe the 32-year old Czech International. Arsenal had been sounded as interested in taking him in the January window but Wenger had previously ruled out that possibility.
The possibility of Arsenal doing business with a fellow London rival is already a tough-to-believe prospect, more so when the manager in charge there is Jose Mourinho. Schwarzer’s imminent departure to join Nigel Pearson’s side all but confirms that won’t be happening.
As much as Wenger has shown that he can keep faith with Wojciech Szczesny as his long-term Number 1, he is clearly not averse to giving him some competition, and even restricting him to participate in games on the bench. The 24-year old Pole inflamed the wrath of his manager with a childish display against Southampton on New Year’s Day and will be replaced in goal by David Ospina for the visit of Hull City in the FA Cup.
Ospina has yet to make an appearance in the League since his summer move to the Emirates, his only games being the League Cup start and as a substitute for his ‘boss’ in the Champions League at home to Galatasaray. He has now overcome the injury that he is believed to have arrived with and will be aiming at keeping himself between the posts, beyond Hull, for the long haul.
Maybe there was something we could have gained with having an experienced campaigner like Cech within our ranks. Surely he won’t let our defenders stray out of position and will definitely show some much lacking leadership that seems to be lacking in the team. Even with a helmet for some 8 years now, he is still has enough control in his head to coordinate his hands and body to make decent saves, and with Courtois leaking five against Tottenham, he could get his chance to show the class that has kept us envying a possible swoop.
