Alex Iwobi has revealed the Arsenal player he believes will become the next to graduate from the academy to the first team. The attacker has become a regular in Arsene Wenger’s team having come through Arsenal’s youth system. The Nigeria international has made four Premier League appearances this term and scored in the recent win over Brighton.
Arsenal have a reputation for bringing through players from their youth system and following Iwobi’s success attention will turn to who could be next. Speaking at a fan Q&A, Iwobi offered his best guess. ‘I don’t know who to expect because you never know at this time who will come through. ‘But I would say Chuba Akpom.’
He added: ‘He’s next to join. I knew Chuba since the age of three, playing Sunday league with him and we’re still at Arsenal together.’
Arsenal fans are already well aware of Akpom who has been threatening to break into the side for years. But having made his debut in 2013 he’s failed to command a place in the side and been persistently sent out on loan. Brentford, Coventry, Nottingham Forest, Hull and Brighton have all taken on the English striker. Despite his slow progress Iwobi is backing his friend to get into the Arsenal side and having remained at the club for this season instead of going out on loan he could get a chance.
