Arsenal striker Stephy Mavididi is set to cut short his loan spell at Preston North End and is poised to return to Charlton.
The 19-year-old has failed to hold down a starting spot with the Championship side, and is expected to complete a move back to the Addicks in the coming days.
Mavididi was left out of the Lilywhites’ squad in their 3-2 defeat against Middlesbrough on New Year’s Day, and is due to link up with Karl Robinson’s men until the end of the season.
According to the Evening Standard, talks were ongoing between the Gunners and Charlton on Tuesday, with the ex-MK Dons boss revealing his side are close to announcing a signing.
He said of the potential new recruit: “He is a good player — proven at this level. He will excite people.
“He is a semi-striker in some ways. He can play up there, behind the striker or wide.
“He can play three different positions. We need strikers – that is obvious.”
Charlton are in desperate need for a new forward after Leon Best picked up a knee injury during the 2-1 loss against Gillingham on Monday.
Mavididi has featured in just 11 games in all competitions this season, and has started a mere three times in the Championship this term.
He moved to the Valley in the last winter transfer, impressive in his five outings before a serious hamstring injury ended his loan spell at the end of February.
