Louis van Gaal will be sweating on the fitness of Anthony Martial for the visit to Arsenal to Old Trafford after he felt his hamstring in the warm-up before Thursday’s Europa League match. Should the Frenchman be ruled out, Memphis Depay or youngster Marcus Rushford may have to fill in as the lone striker.
Juan Mata and Jesse Lingard look sure starters in the attacking midfield positions in the usual 4-2-3-1 formation then, with Andreas Pereira a possible starter should Depay be used up front. Ander Herrera could also be used in the attacking midfield areas, with Michael Carrick and Morgan Schneiderlin the leading options to start at the base of midfield. Chris Smalling missed out last night due to a shoulder injury, but he may be fit to face the Gunners.
Smalling could continue alongside Delay Blind in central defence, with Guillermo Varela or Donald Love likely to start at right-back. Cameron Borthwick-Jackson also missed out last night due to a minor knock, but could also come back into contention for Sunday. Marcos Rojo played 11 minutes as a substitute against FC Midtjylland and may be rushed straight into Premier League action.
Van Gaal also has an injury concern in goal, with David de Gea still struggling to shake off a knee injury. Sergio Romero could continue between the sticks, then. Luke Shaw, Matteo Darmian, Antonio Valencia, Bastian Schweinsteiger and Ashley Young and Wayne Rooney remain sidelined, although Valencia has returned to training.
Phil Jones, Marouane Fellaini, Adnan Januzaj and Will Keane are all serious doubts.
