Arsenal will have to move quickly to dot the ‘i’s of the proposed move for Gabriel Paulista to overcome the challenge of United, if reports according to Daily Star are anything to go by.
The reports are saying that Louis van Gaal has invoked a last minute will to scupper the Gunners’ bid for the Villareal star defender and it could come down to the financials.
Arsene Wenger has confirmed that he and his colleagues at the Emirates are trying to reach an agreement with the bosses at the Madrigal but should United be willing to match the 24-year old’s £15 million buy-out clause – or even surpass it, Wenger may be left with a red face.
To the majority of observers, Gabriel Paulista to Arsenal is all but a done deal as long as the work permit issues are thrashed out. He is yet to represent the Selecao in senior games and he does not hold a Spanish passport yet, hence making it necessary that the club obtain a special talent visa for him. As far as we know, this does not appear beyond the limits of what the Arsenal can do.
But where the threat of United lies is in the fact they could be able to offer him some ridiculous wage package which Wenger, in his very reasonable sense of prudence, will not be inclined to do. He has stated that the right price will be paid “no matter what” as long as it is the right player but certainly we know there are demands that will ultimately prove exorbitant.
That said, Paulista does look like he has his mind set on Arsenal already and any likelihood of a United spoiler game would look highly unlikely. When asked about the move, the tough-looking defender showed nerveless calmness like one who was not overly bothered about any stumbling block to it, though he admitted he would love to play for Arsenal. He said he would leave it all to his agent and following a tweet by the Mirror’s John Cross this morning, the player’s agent has spent the last two days in the Passport office in London, trying to get necessary clearances while other terms are being agreed with the Gunners.
But why would United want to interrupt anyway? They have Smalling, Evans, Jones, Blind and Rojo, not to mention Paddy McNair and Tyler Blackett. Arsenal have just Mertesacker and Koscielny (and Chambers)… Give ‘em Gunners a break
