The summer transfer window may be just a distant memory, but with the season well underway managers have already started their preparations for January..
Arsenal may finally have been knocked off track in the pursuit of Real Madrid star, Karim Benzema, as there are reports according to Daily Star that Liverpool have made an audacious bid for his services.
It’s no secret that the Reds have been a ghost of the team that nearly won the Premier League last year, largely due to the goals of Luis Suarez and with the Uruguayan gone, they’ve not been on such form this season. Balotelli was bought for £16m over the summer but rumours of a possible loan spell away from Anfield in January already tells all there is to know about his impact.
Rodgers is now on fighting hard to dislodge Wenger from one his long term admirers, with a mammoth bid reported to be in the region of £50m being readied. The Arsenal boss currently enjoys a bit of a surplus of options upfront and may not be so desperate to be lunging in, granting Liverpool the leeway to make further advances.
It remains to be seen if Madrid would indeed let their only recognized striker move away this season, especially in the middle of what has been a sensational run in both La Liga and the Champions League. Though behind Ronaldo and Bale in the praise, Benzema surely has upped his game since being assured of his role as the chief Number 9 following the sale of Higuain, contributing more even in assists.
He was one of the most impressive strikers in Europe this season, playing a crucial part in Real Madrid’s current 21-game winning run in all competitions. He was one of the most mentioned names when we had the need to strengthen the team in attack, especially last season.
With the acquisition of Welbeck, it appears the hunt may have mellowed to an extent, hence allowing Brendan Rodgers to make the move for the player. Sources say there have been talks between the Liverpool manager with the powers at the Capital club and there appears to be a gentleman’s agreement that the player will be allowed to discuss personal terms.
With Sturridge still injured, Liverpool are expected to keep up the search for a marquee striker to replace his and Suarez’s goals of last season. Arsene Wenger passed up the chance to sign up Mario Balotelli this summer despite various reports which had given strong indications that the deal was almost certain to happen.
Brendan Rodgers made the move for the striker after Arsene beat Liverpool to Alexis Sanchez whom they had hoped would be part of the Suarez deal. However, the maverick Italian has yet to live up to his £16m transfer from AC Milan, while Daniel Sturridge still bears injury concerns.
