But that has been shattered recently, with Henrikh Mkhitaryan on £200,000-a-week, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang £180,000-a-week joining from Manchester United and Borussia Dortmund.
Meanwhile Mesut Ozil has put pen to paper on a new deal at Arsenal worth around £350,000 a week.
According to The Times, the players held a “constructive” meeting with Wenger on Tuesday that focused promising to halt their wretched run of results of four wins in 15 games.
Arsenal have dropped out of mathematical contention for the Premier League title at the earliest point in Wenger’s tenure – a sure sign of how far they have fallen since they last won the title in 2004.
And there has been deep resentment among some of the Gunners’ ranks over ballooning wages in some corners of the squad.
