Do Arsenal really need to sign a new centre-back this summer?

In what was a rather disappointing news, Arsenal have confirmed the departure of club captain Laurent Koscielny to Bordeaux.

One of Arsenal’s remaining longest serving members of the team with 9-years under his belt, Koscielny, has called time on his stay at the Emirates Stadium to return to the French Ligue 1.

Following the disappointing news, Arsenal have been tipped by bookmakers such as online sports betting Canada to sign a perfect replacement for the 33-year old Frenchman before the close of the summer transfer window, and subsequently, the start of the new season.

Koscielny said in a statement on Instagram: “As you know i engaged with @girondins. After 9 years spent at Arsenal, i took the decision to leave.”

“I have spent wonderful years with this club, nine years during which i learned, evolved, grew up”

“This experience made me the player I am today. My decision to leave has been discussed for months with my club, my teammates, my coach, and it has been a well thought decision.”

“I see this departure like a new turning point in my life as a player but also in in my life as a man and a family man.”

“However I hope you understand, and in any case i cannot be thankful enough for these years past at Arsenal. I am aware of everything that the club and you supporters have brought to me. But it is time for me to go home so today my will is to join Bordeaux . This is a new challenge that I count on taking with determination.
Lolo”

Following Koscielny’s decision to leave the Emirates in a rather disappointing fashion, do Arsenal really need to sign a replacement for him?

Your answer is as good as mine, Yes! we do need a replacement. And with the transfer window set to shut in just a matter or hours, pundits such as sports spread betting  are backing Arsenal to sign a defender as quickly as possible. But if not, lets take a hard look at who we have got in store at the moment:

Chambers:

Although he won the Player of The Season award while on loan to Fulham last season, still, Chambers is not the world class centre-back the fans are clamouring for. However, given the situation on ground Arsenal could do with him as a back-up and squad player for the season.

Mavropanos:

Although tipped for the very top and at the heart of Arsenal’s defence, the highly rated Greek youngster can hardly stay fit. This has led to fans losing hope in the powerful defender.

Sokratis:

Asides Koscielny, Sokratis is one of Arsenal’s most reliable centre-backs, although age is no longer on his side. However, Papa is one of the very few the fans trust at the heart of the defence. He does need an equally reliable partner.

Mustafi:

Mustafi is supposed to be the leader at the heart of the Arsenal defence, but his erratic decision making in and around the box has led to widespread criticism from Gooners, who have called for him to be sold this summer.

Holding:

Possibly the only shining light in the heart of Arsenal defence after Sokratis, Arsenal will be hoping to have him back from injury and then to full fitness.

In conclusion, YES Arsenal do really need to sign a defender and in this case since we cannot do that at the moment we have to keep hold of the above mentioned stars and back them to carry the team this season.
