Arsenal are set to miss out on Schalke 04 midfielder Leon Goretzka, according to the Sun.
The Gunners have been keeping tabs on the midfielder since last season and he was said to have impressed Wenger with his fine form for Schalke.
His scintillating performances in the FIFA Confederation Cup tournament played last month further strengthened Wenger’s desire to sign him, with a £27m bid reportedly on the offing but it appears the Gunners have lost out in the race to sign the midfielder.
Bayern Munich were also attracted by Goretzka’s performances and they are the ones now closing in on the midfielder.
Bundesliga expert Raphael Honigstein revealed via Twitter that the Bundesliga champions have agreed terms with the player which will see him arrive at the Allianz Arena in 2018.
Bayern have been snapping up Germany’s most talented players over the years and if Honigstein’s claim is true, Goretzka is set to be the next to leave a rival club for the Allianz Arena.
Goretzka has one year left in his contract at Schalke and if he is joining Bayern in 2018, it means he will be leaving his current club as a free agent. Arsenal could still take advantage of this by submitting a bid which Schalke and the player will find difficult to turn down.
But this may spark a bidding war between both parties, whether the boss will be willing to get into a bidding war remains to be seen but I think its worth fighting for a player with Goretzka’s potential.
