A pretty defensively-positive transfer window may not extend to midfield for Arsenal as Inter Milan look to have won the race for Croatian midfielder, Marcelo Brozovic.
The Mirror had earlier reported a deal of around £8.5m is already in place between Dinamo Zagreb and the Serie A club to sign the 22-year old this January, effectively knocking the Gooners off the rail.
Arsenal had been strongly linked with Brozovic last summer with scouts sent to watch him often. Talks were said to be progressing well especially during the period of the midfield crisis between November and late December.
However, Roberto Mancini has been on an impressive recruitment undertaking and now looks set to add the Arsenal target to his list of additions. Inter have taken Podolski on loan from Arsenal this window and have also beat the Gunners to Xherdan Shaqiri. The 2010 Champions League Winners have been on something of a downslide for some seasons and are currently placed at 11th spot on the Serie A log, having left it late to lose at home to Torino on Sunday.
Mancini wants to change that so desperately to return the Nerazzuri to the team he once led to three consecutive Scudetto titles before coming to England, and it seems the way he wants to go about it is taking players off Arsenal’s list.
Brozovic is rated as the next big midfielder to come from Croatia, tipped to follow in the footsteps of La Liga stars Luka Modric and Ivan Rakitic. He is mainly an attacking midfielder but he displays a collection of skills which makes him adaptable to every position in the midfield, no less the defensive midfield role so craved for by Arsenal. He features for Zagreb in a more advanced midfield role, but is solid enough to play a role just ahead of the back four. He may not be seen as the Carvalho or Bender so sorely demanded by Gooners but at 22, he has the potential to be schooled to become the best he could be under Wenger’s tested and trusted guidance.
That doesn’t look like it will happen now as fresh reports according to Daily Star reports that Inter Milan have wrapped up a two-year loan deal for the midfielder.
In a statement on their official website, Inter announced the capture of the coveted midfielder, who has since the start of the winter transfer window and earlier, attracted interest from a host of Europe’s top clubs.
The statement said per Daily Star: “Marcelo Brozovic is an Inter player.
“F.C. International announces that it has put under contract the Croatian midfielder , born in 1992 , who arrives at Inter with the formula of the two-year loan with an obligation to repurchase affected.”
This reports would surely come as a blow to the host of premier league clubs all vying for the signature of the youngster, with Arsenal amongst the trio interested.
