England Should Have Snapped Up This Arsenal Star – Claims Wenger

Arsene Wenger claims England have only themselves to blame for letting youngster Alex Iwobi sleep through their net.

The youngster who has been tipped for big things in football produced another stunning display at the Emirates in the Gunners FA Cup fourth-round victory over Burnley last weekend. The 19-year-old – the nephew of former Nigeria and Bolton star Jay Jay Okocha – has pledged his future to Nigeria despite representing England at under-16, u-17s and u-18s levels.

Gunners boss Wenger went lyrical about what a talent his versatile attacking midfielder is and claimed the Three Lions have missed a trick, he said: “I think he’s one England have missed because he plays for Nigeria now. He should play for England.

“I don’t think he has played in a competitive game for Nigeria. I remember I turned him down for an U23 friendly tournament. But then Nigeria called him up for the first team to force him to go.

“But it’s a massive football country. 180 million people, a big history. Okocha is a top legend there, Kanu, Okocha, big stars there.

“I think he has shown everybody that he is a good football player, again. I find him personally very interesting. His decision-making is spot on. His awareness is very interesting. He’s very clever. I like his game.

“He always turns where you want him to turn, and he plays the ball where you want him to play the ball. He’s very interesting.

“I have a hesitation about loaning him out because I think this guy could very quickly play. He can play on the left, he can play on the right, he can play behind the striker, even number nine.

“He scores goals in training. He’s one who when he was a kid could pass by if you don’t watch well in training but I personally like his game.”
