Newcastle United are set to continue their signing spree with the loan acquisition of Arsenal left back Kieran Gibbs.
The Magpies who are currently battling relegation have already spent a league high £30million this January, but manager Steve McLaren remains keen on further additions to bolster his squad before the close of the window.
Following reports earlier in the week that the England international was considering a move away from the Emirates in a bid to secure more regular playing time with Nacho Monreal now Wenger’s undisputed first-choice at left-back having displaced Gibbs in the first team during the course of last season, leaving Gibbs with a reduced role on the bench having started just twice in the Premier League this season and making just five appearances across all competitions this season.
The Daily Star currently reports that the Magpies are ready to offer Gibbs an escape route and an assurance of first team action.
Wenger has however reiterated his desire to hold on to the defender and has promised him more game time ahead of the Euro championship in June “Gibbs went through a period that was difficult for him, now he is back to full power, full commitment. He is very fit, he will get games. He is quality player, again it is competition. I understand players have targets of making squads for the Euros, but first and most important is the club. To be at the Euros is a consequence of what you do for the club.”
It is strongly believed that Wenger will reject the offer as he is keen to maintain his squad depth needed for the Gunners title challenge.
