Arsene Wenger has denied making a world record bid for Kylian Mbappe who is being linked with a move to the Emirates.
Mbappe is a target of Arsenal and Wenger has confirmed his interest in signing the striker on several occasions.
An £87m bid was reportedly rejected for the striker earlier in the summer but yesterday, reports in Spain claimed Wenger had returned with an improved £123m bid. The boss quickly denied that claim but admitted it will take a world record fee to sign the striker.
“That’s not true,” Wenger said about a new bid for the striker.
“People have big imaginations. What we know now with Mbappe is it’s over £100m, after that it’s free for everyone to imagine.
“But we have not made any offer. I think he will stay, it looks like that, for one more season.”
Wenger’s comments also suggest he has shelved his interest in the striker for now as he believes the teenager will remain at Monaco for another season.
Mbappe attracted interest from a number of top clubs, after scoring 15 league goals for Monaco last season, which was his debut season.
Real Madrid, Paris Saint Germain, Manchester City and Liverpool have all been linked with the forward but it appears Monaco will be the big winners, assuming Wenger’s claims are true.
At 18, the young striker isn’t in a hurry to move to a big club and is more concerned about continuing his rapid development.
