Arsenal’s chase of highly-sought young midfielder, William Carvalho, has been handed a massive boost as his club have lowered their asking price, according to reports.
The 22-year old Portuguese International is also on the radar of Manchester United and is believed to be very eager for a move to the Premier League. The Gunners reportedly failed to table an offer acceptable to the bosses of the Lisbon-based club, the bid being about #10m short of the #37m set out as his buy-out clause. With the player keen on a move to fulfill his ambitions, however, Sporting appear resigned to losing him, and are now ready to accept a fee lower than that of his stipulated value.
Carvalho has been a constant feature for the Sportinguistas, playing every match of their Champions League campaign so far including the recent dramatic double header against Schalke, the second leg which was won by 4 – 2 by Carvalho and co yesterday after a close 4 – 3 at the Veltins Arena a fortnight ago. Sporting are likely to qualify from their Champions League group which also includes Chelsea, though their win against Schalke have moved them within a point to nicking second place ahead of Germans. However, they have not been as impressive in the Portuguese League currently placed at seventh place, six points adrift of leaders Benfica after 9 games. He has not made secret his desire to play in the bigger leagues, even giving some inkling to possible failed attempt
“We all have ambitions and I hope one day to play in the best leagues in the world, the English or Spanish.” Carvalho to the Portuguese Association’s Magazine.
“It was not this year, but if I continue to do my job as I have done so, it will certainly come sooner or later.”
The lowering of his fee will present a huge encouragement to Wenger to make another attempt to capture the energetic midfielder. With captain Mikel Arteta continually struggling for fitness with recurring injuries threatening the stability of the club, Wenger will be left with no choice than to force the issue in January. Another incentive to making the move for Carvalho would be his perceived admiration for Arsenal, being a fan of Thierry Henry back in the Highbury days.
United are likely to still pose a threat when the bidding begins, while Chelsea are sure to want to play the spoilers with a huge offer. In Carvalho, Wenger will get the one of the most reliable defensive midfielder planet earth currently can afford, and at 22, he is only just learning his trade. A player widely acclaimed for his passing range, he also possesses that physique and strength which makes him tailor-made for this kind of role, while his experience in the Champions League and even being on the bench at the World Cup will give him the belief to settle quickly into a huge club like Arsenal.
