Arsenal’s new head of recruitment Sven Mislintat wants to land the Bayer Leverkusen goalkeeper as a long-term replacement for 35-year-old Petr Cech.
Gunners chiefs have held talks over a deal for Leno and, according to The Sun, the Germany international is keen to make the switch.
Leno is available at a knockdown price due to a release clause in his contract, which expires in 2020.
Arsenal were handed a major boost last week when Napoli’s move for the six-cap Germany international hit the wall.
Leno’s agent Uli Ferber revealed: “I can confirm there were negotiations with Napoli, but we stopped them.
“Napoli are not an option.”
According to The Sun, Arsenal hope to announce the deal for Leno by June 1.
Leno joined Leverkusen from Stuttgart in 2011 and has made 304 appearances for the club.
He conceded 49 goals in 38 games this term, keeping 12 clean sheets.
Despite being considered one of the greatest goalkeepers in Premier League history, Cech showed signs of decline during a difficult season for Arsenal.
He committed the most errors leading to goals of any stopper in the top-flight and has just one year left on his contract.
David Ospina, who has played second fiddle to Cech since the former Chelsea ace’s arrival in 2015, also faces an uncertain future at the club.
