The Lyon hotshot has set the Ligue 1 alight with his immense display in front of goal this season, scoring a resounding 24 goals in 24 appearances in all competitions this season but news of a possible three-week spell on the sidelines could keep him out of action for some time, but more importantly, end speculation about a move to the Emirates this January.
The Daily Star cites a French Journalist’s tweet bearing the sad news which would see the top marksman miss crucial games against Monaco, PSG and Lorient.
Lyon has been in the watchlist of most top European clubs this season not just due to their amazing run in the Ligue 1 where they sit above Champions PSG, but their home grown stars are winning keen admiration and attention.
Beyond him being French and Arsenal being in the reins of a French boss, Lacazette does fit into the Arsenal style of play, as attested to by the Legendary Robert Pires, and he is one of those young prospects the Gunners must break the bank for. There was always a small window for that to come through this winter as Lyon pursue the Championnat and any slim chance of it even squeezing through has been further snuffed away.
Lacazette has been tracked by a host of Premier League sides since last summer after a string of promising performances since making his debut in 2010, with Arsenal and Liverpool more serious in capturing him over the summer. Wenger was believed to be interested in launching a sensational bid for the energetic youngster but met with resistance from the Lyon board, as they value him as one of their brightest assets for the future. Lacazette has been in blistering form this season and an absence from the Lyon team for those important top-of-the-table clashes could undermine the strength of their hold at the top.
Wenger had been guilty of trading on injured players in some of his previous transfer dealings but not even the eccentricity of Lacazette’s form can induce him to repeat that. Besides, he has seen three forwards leave the club on loan in the past three weeks and while there is some speculation as to whether he has plans to bring one striker in this window, a look through the squad probably suggests the contrary would be the best for now.
However, there will be enormous interest in this young rising star in the summer and it will not be off track to start watering the ground now. Lyon do want to keep this core of young players – including another Arsenal target, Nabil Fekir – beyond the current season. It will take something huge to land him but it will be worth it by then.
For now, his injury takes him off the list.
