Former Arsenal star Paul Merson believes some Arsenal players should demand to leave the club just like Coutinho has done at Liverpool.
Arsenal are looking to ship out so many players before the transfer window closes in a fortnight but the club are struggling to do so due to a number of reasons.
Mathieu Debuchy, Carl Jenkinson, Kieran Gibbs and Lucas Perez are some of the names Arsenal are looking to get rid of this summer but Merson has urged some other players to seek an exit.
Merson believes players like Walcott and Giroud who look like they won’t be playing regularly should ask the club to let them leave instead of sitting on the bench.
Speaking about Arsenal players after Arsenal’s 4-3 win over Leicester City on Friday night, Merson said, as quoted by the Express:
“They’re all happy,” the former striker said on Sky Sports of Arsenal ’s players.
“You say about keeping them happy, they’re not fussed, you never see any of them wanting to leave.
“If I was Walcott I would be doing what Coutinho is doing now and saying ‘I want a transfer, I’m not playing, I want to play football’.
“But they don’t do they, they just sit there, it’s nice isn’t it’, it’s just lovely. It is, it’s nice, they’re loved.
“I feel sorry for Giroud because he is France’s centre-forward and the problem will be if he doesn’t play this season, will he go to the World Cup?
“All these footballers will be looking at that this season.”
Arsenal do have a large squad and some of these fringe players have to leave inorder not to damage the mental climate of the team but it is also important for us to have a deep enough squad to cope with the challenges of the Premier League.
Players like Giroud and Walcott are crucial to maintaining the team’s strong depth, so I don’t buy Merson’s opinion. They can still play important roles for us during the course of the season and I believe they should be more focused on what they can do for the team rather than leaving.
