Borussia Dortmund have run out of words with which to convince star player Marco Reus to put pen to paper over a new deal, handing Arsenal a major boost in our bid to sign him according to Daily Star.
The 25 year old Reus has been one of Europe’s most sought after forwards over the past two seasons, being the subject of pursuit from the likes of Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, Barcelona, Liverpool, Manchester United and City, as well as the Gunners. With his exit clause set at just £20m, the Dortmund hierarchy have been working tooth and nail to present favourable terms to the superstar for him to extend his commitments to the cause at the Westfalenstadion.
However, with Dortmund struggling to rally themselves round to wake up from their disastrous start to this BundesLiga season, the club have put negotiations on hold with Reus, seeking rather to focus on getting themselves into gear for the season.
According to Dortmund Sporting Director, Michael Zorc:
“Nothing has changed about our intentions to continue our collaboration with Marco”
“But the current situation demands full focus from everybody at the club”
“Our biggest priority at the moment is to get out of the difficult situation. Everything else comes after that for now”.
It appears the bosses have conceded to the fact that they will lose Reus to one of the big sides who can stump up the £32m quoted to be sufficient to land him.
Bayern Munich’s history of poaching players from Dortmund would give them the tag as favourites to sign Reus next summer, as they have done with Mario Goetze and Robert Lewandowski. However, there is the issue of who Guardiola would want and if Reus would exactly be a fit a in his tiki taka philosophy, which immediately presents the likes of Liverpool and Real Madrid as other likely destinations. Both clubs are known for attacking with pace down the flanks with expansive cross-field passes.
Reus is one of the best wingers in Europe and his technical abilities with regards to pin-point passing will be a perfect complement to the likes of Daniel Sturridge, Coutinho, Ronaldo and Bale. The possibility of signing for Real may, however, be slim as Reus is a declared fan of the Barcelona way of football and the other matter of playing in the place of Ronaldo is quite not feasible. Barcelona are yet to be publicly linked with him even if he’s inclined towards their style of play, and it doesn’t appear Luis Enrique has any plans to disrupt the Neymar-Suarez-Messi chain at the Camp Nou, with youngsters like Munir El Haddadi expected to be given a chance to grow this season.
Arsenal’s major rival to landing Reus, it appears, would be majorly among fellow English rivals as United have apparently been very up-to-date on the playmaker’s situation. City’s struggles to establish themselves this season may see them scouring for reinforcement and may be looking to steal the star from under our noses.
Yet, we must still keep leading in the race to sign him, as we are in need of another world class playmaker to supplement the likes of Ozil and Alexis as we continue to rebuild the Arsenal to the force it once was. His injury record aside, Reus is a true superstar who would massively boost our team for years to come, giving us a more than decent chance to have trophy laden days.
After surviving years of having to rely on signings like Chamakh, Asharvin and Gervinho due to shortage of funds, it is time for us to go on and get our Arsenal back and with Reus now available, it must be a delight to Gooners that we are financially capable of landing him; we can and we should.
