Arsenal’s pursuit of a defensive midfielder has led them to a well-trodden path, with reports saying that a move for Barcelona youngster Sergi Samper is on the cards.
The famed “highway” between Barcelona’s La Masia academy has seen the likes of Cesc Fabregas, Jon Toral and Hector Bellerin leaving Spain to make a name for themselves at Arsenal.
Reports now have it that Sergi Samper could be the latest to be poached from Barcelona, with his path to a regular first team place at Camp Nou blocked by a long list of quality stars including Sergio Busquets, Javier Mascherano and Sergi Roberto.
Arsene Wenger see Samper as a long term replacement for Mikel Arteta, and are even prepared to match his £8.4million release clause.
The 20-year-old Spain U21 International has been on the Gunners radar for a while, with reports claiming Arsenal attempted to lure him to the Emirates Stadium last summer.
The Gunners are expected to make a marquee defensive midfield signing this summer, but with Coquelin proving he can hold his own in the starting line-up; the attention has now been switched to signing a potential replacement for Mikel Arteta.
Samper is frustrated with having to play for the Barcelona B team; however, Barca are reluctant to sell him, but are willing to loan him out with Porto also showing interest.
It remains to be seen however, if Wenger can seal this one.
