Going no where! Arsenal hand Theo Walcott new bumper deal
Theo Walcott is set to be the latest Arsenal player to be handed a new deal at the Emirates as Arsene Wenger looks to secure the future of core members of the team.
This will be a follow up to Olivier Giroud and Mikel Arteta’s renewals with the club, as the duo are set to sign the dotted lines for further stays at the Emirates. Wenger had earlier stated that the club is intent on keeping the group of players who are believed to be part of the future of the club, though they may belong to different ends of the age spectrum. Theo Walcott’s current deal runs out in 2016 and with Wenger having made Giroud, who is 28, to commit till 2018 while the likes of Cazorla, Mertesacker, Koscileny and Tomas Rosciky all signed for the long term last season, it is hard to imagine Walcott not been asked to stay even longer.
Walcott has been a key member of Arsene Wenger’s teams over the past couple of seasons, serving as the man for the goals and assists in the season that followed van Persie’s exit from the club in 2012, having been his main provider for a significant measure of his 30 League goals the season before. Two long term injuries last season would not allow the 25 year old England International to replicate the form of those seasons, having only few games between November and December during which period he scored as much as you’d get. The ligament damage at home to Spurs in the FA Cup clash in January has since kept him out of action, though he’s now set to return after the October International break.
Walcott joined Arsenal as a 16 year old from the famous Southampton academy in 2006, and has gone on to make over 250 appearances, scoring 69 goals. His best season yet was in the 2012/2013 season in which he scored 14 League goals from 24 starts, finishing the season with 21 goals in all competitions. He is currently the top-scoring player in the Arsenal squad as well as the oldest first team player in terms of date of arrival to the club. He has always been used to great effect on the right side of the attack, though there have been opinions on him being able to thrive in the center forward position, a theory thought to have been initially behind him inheriting the jersey number of Gunner legend, Thierry Henry. Danny Welbeck’s performances against Galatasaray which has been eliciting comparisons with the legend may have an impact on that possibility now.
It surely will be a welcome thing for Walcott to be tied to the club for as long as possible, as it is all too evident how important he will be to the future success of the team. Hopefully, it won’t have to result to the release of mixtapes of the ‘SIGN DA TING’ remixes for the deal to be done.
