Max Meyer is set to end his less productive spell with Bundesliga side Schalke 04 as his contract expires in the summer. The player has been Tottenham’s target since 2016 summer window, but the Lilywhites couldn’t afford to meet up with the player’s price tag.
It was reported last summer in media outlets that Schalke were ready to cash-in on the player because they were disappointed with the player’s performance since he was promoted to the senior team by Horst Heldt in the 2015-16 season.
The reports emanating from the Arena AufSchalke via Sports Bild suggest that Arsenal are in contention for the player’s signature, but they are only willing to get him as a free agent when the transfer window reopens by June.
The Gunners manager Arsene Wenger was able to improve the quality of his team in the January transfer market after getting Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Henrikh Mkhitaryan. He will be hoping to do the same when the summer window commences.
Barcelona are also said to be monitoring the player’s situation, and they might compete with Arsenal for the 22-year-old signature. The Blaugrana who currently top the league table with 58 points could move for the player as a possible replacement for midfield maestro Andrés Iniesta who might retire anytime soon.
Tottenham might also rekindle their interest in the Germany international playmaker as they hope to improve their squad in the summer after signing only Lucas Moura in the winter window.
