Arsene Wenger has made signing Shkodran Mustafi his priority this summer, according to reports.
Wenger has stepped up his search for a centre back following injuries to Per Mertesacker and Gabriel Paulista. Mertesacker has been ruled out of action until next year while Gabriel is set to miss the next six weeks leaving the club very short at the back and Wenger is keen to sign an experienced defender as cover before the end of the transfer window.
According to the Telegraph, Wenger has identified Mustafi as the experienced defender and the club will formalize its interest in the defender in the next few days.
Arsenal enquired about the defender few weeks ago and were boosted by Valencia’s willingness to sell the player below his £42m release clause.
It is understood that a bid of £30m will be enough to sign the defender as Valencia are looking to balance their financial books.
Mustafi is rated as one of the best defenders in Europe and has showed his qualities for the La Liga outfit since he joined the club in 2014.
Arsenal are also keeping tabs on West Brom’s Johnny Evans as an alternative target to Mustafi. Wenger is hoping to push through a move for either of the duo before the end of the transfer window.
