Arsenal have received a huge boost in the race to sign Gonzalo Higuain, according to a report in Ibtimes.
The Gunners are believed to be in the race to sign the striker and are facing competition from Italian giants Juventus with the Turin club said to have agreed personal terms with the striker’s camp.
Arsenal have now received a huge boost as Juventus have failed to reach an agreement with Napoli clearing the way for Arsenal to make a move.
Juventus were hoping to reach an agreement with Napoli over signing the striker but the Naples were adamant that the player’s €94m release clause and now both clubs have ruled out completing the deal for now.
“For now the Higuain matter is closed. I can confirm that we will not pay the clause,” Juventus chief, Marotta told reporters, as quoted by Goal.
Napoli president Aurellio De Laurentiis also had his say
“Whoever wants him can pay the clause. Juventus never had any intention of doing so. I don’t know if something will change but [Juve general manager Giuseppe] Marotta is smart and knows perfectly well they can’t do this great wrong and that it’s a losing battle,” De Laurentiis said.
“There’s a release clause, according to which if someone says ‘we’ll pay it’, Higuain can accept the offer from any club and Napoli will only accept those offers.”
“The clause was inserted to protect ourselves, because the higher the clause the more someone has to pay. No club has offered it so far and Higuain hasn’t said anything,” he added.
The only thing between Arsenal and Higuain appears to be the release clause and it is unknown if Wenger would be interested in paying the striker’s clause.
