Arsenal could lose Jack Wilshere for free this summer with the England international yet to sign a contract extension.
The England international has enjoyed a fine campaign but, with Liverpool and Manchester City sniffing about, may be on the move.
And Spanish newspaper AS say Arsenal are interested in signing Atletico’s Saul as his replacement.
The Spain international is loyal to Atletico but has previously been linked with a move to England.
Manchester United wanted him during Louis van Gaal’s time at charge.
But he decided to stay at the Wanda Metropolitano, where he continues to develop for Diego Simeone’s side.
AS say Arsenal are aware they need to overhaul their flailing squad at the end of the season.
And they have reportedly contacted Atletico about potentially paying his £143million release clause.
However, Saul is said to be committed to Simeone and not focused on a move away.
As well as United, Fulham were surprisingly linked back in 2011.
And, speaking last year, Saul admitted he was delighted to miss out on a move to the capital.
“Fulham wanted me when I was 16,” he said.
“They were in the Premier League at the time with Mark Hughes and I was close to going.
“They had a plan for me to train with them for three months and then to start playing directly.
“I could go from the Atletico B team to the Premier League. I felt ready to make that jump. Thank God I never went.”
