Arsenal Legend Martin Keown has backed Arsene Wenger to sign a new deal at the Emirates.
Wenger’s contract at Arsenal expires at the end of the season and the boss is yet to decide whether he will sign a new deal or not. He recently revealed his decision to sign a new deal will be based on his gut feeling but Keown believes it is almost certain that the boss will sign a new deal.
Following the 3-1 defeat to Chelsea on Saturday, our hopes of winning a first Premier League title after 12 season has faded once again and some fans were quick to call for the manager to step down but Keown doesn’t think that will happen.
“I think if you look at it, Arsene Wenger will decide when he leaves the club,” said Keown to BT Sport, as quoted by the Daily Star.
“I believe he manages up and down within the club.
“They’re going to want to have a run-up to a succession plan at Arsenal Football Club and that will mean Arsene Wenger signing a new deal. I don’t know if that sits completely well with the fans.”
Obviously this wouldn’t go down well with some fans as some were quick to voice out their disappointment during the game against Chelsea but like Keown rightly pointed out, axing Wenger could back fire if we don’t have a good successor lined up.
“If you look at other situations, Manchester United losing Sir Alex Ferguson, I believe he’ll sign a new contract, Keown added.
It’s just really the announcement. When is the right time?
Although some reports have claimed Wenger could be axed if Arsenal fail to win a trophy this season but club chiefs priority remains for him to sign a new deal and I believe he will eventually put pen to paper if we manage to secure a top four finish.
We are made to believe that the boss has a new two year deal on the table already, if true, it wouldn’t be difficult to convince him to extend his stay, whether he wins a trophy or not.
