Lee Dixon has heaped more misery on Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger by claiming the Gunners are under-pressure manager is ‘not a true coach’.

The Gunners lost 2-1 at Brighton on Sunday for their fourth successive defeat in all competitions, a run which saw them lose the Carabao Cup final and leaves them 13 points behind neighbours Tottenham — who are fourth in the Premier League.

That defeat has further increased the heat on Wenger, who has faced recent criticism from club legends including Ian Wright.

And now Dixon — who enjoyed 14 years with the north Londoners — has hit out at the Frenchman by crediting Tony Adams for aiding Ashley Cole’s development and the former full back also had a go at Wenger’s signings, singling out central defender Shkodran Mustafi.

Speaking at the Arsenal Supporters’ Trust AGM on Monday night, where 88 per cent of members voted for Wenger to go in the summer, he said: ‘Tony Adams coached Ashley Cole into becoming the best left back in the world.

‘It had nothing to do with the coaching from Arsene.’

On the signings made by Arsenal’s long-serving manager, Dixon said: ‘Wenger recruited some great players Kolo Toure, Sol (Campbell), Thierry Henry. But Mustafi?

‘I spoke to Gary Neville (who briefly managed the Mestalla outift) who said Valencia couldn’t give him away. Then Arsenal came along and paid £30m for him.

‘I didnt think the players that Wenger brought in are good enough. Six of the current starting XI aren’t good enough.

‘But I thought give them a chance, if they get coached and trained to improve.’

He added: ‘Bouldy does get to do some stuff in training, but not as much as he would like.

‘Arsene went through a period of allowing him to do a little bit more. There was recognition in the press that AFC looked a bit more solid. Then it all went away.’
