Mexican World Cup defender, Hector Moreno, has been reportedly offered to the Gunners in a £5.5m cut-price deal as his agent puts a rubber stamp to his client’s desire to move on to a bigger challenge.
Moreno, 27, was one of Miguel Herrera’s stand out performers in their World Cup campaign last summer in Brazil and he has since been linked with a potential Premier League move. His agent, Eduardo Hernandez, has previously talked up a move away from Espanyol, and confirmed his client’s desire for a new challenge in football.
‘Moreno is leaving Espanyol,’ he said, according to the Metro.
‘’He wants to leave and we’re looking for another team in Europe.’’
Mexico left the World Cup with one of the meanest defenses of the tournament, conceding only once before the 2 – 1 defeat to the Netherlands in the Round of 16, and Moreno was part of that miserly defence.
He is 27, and a good ball playing center back who held his own against teams like Brazil and Croatia with all the attacking threats they have, though they eventually got done by Arjen Robben’s diving antics.
Arsenal have, until now, been linked mostly with locally based defenders in Winston Reid and Virgil van Dijk and even if it appears both could be available, a £6m deal for Moreno with the International experience he has might be good enough to turn Wenger’s head to a solution from abroad.
The signing of Gabriel Paulista gave the indication that Wenger was willing to tweak his ideas a little, afterall, especially helped by the injuries to Mat Debuchy. But beyond that, the manager must consider strengthening the competition amongst his center halves to see if presenting a real challenge to Laurent Koscielny and Per Mertesacker would see them wake up a bit more and prove their top qualities.
While the likes of Hummels, Varane, Laporte and Marquinhos remain the most attractive names as far as defenders in the market go, a vastly experienced Moreno at International level could prove a bargain buy if the club seat down to negotiate with his club and agent.
The major flaw would be his relative lack of involvement in top competitions until now as Espanyol have neither been the Europa League not Champions League for some time. They may be bitter rivals to Barcelona but there’s always been daylight between both clubs.
That said, he will be one of those to be kept a close eye on when the search begins in the summer.
