Arsenal legend Paul Merson is certain that Jack Wilshere will not be at the Emirates next season.

Wilshere’s future has been up in the air since he asked for a move to Bournemouth last summer.

Arsenal were always going to make a decision on his future this summer as he is entering into the final year of his contract and reports claim the club has now decided not to offer him a new contract.

Merson is one of those who thinks Wilshere’s future had been decided since last summer. The ex Gunner believes Wenger’s decision to allow Wilshere leave on loan meant his long-term future was no longer at the Emirates.

“It’s a definite that he [Wilshere] will leave,” he said. “I don’t think he was in Wenger’s plans.

“If you send someone on loan, you send them on loan for three months. If he’d have gone to Bournemouth for three months and set it alight and scored eight goals in three months, then you could call him back. But as soon as he sent him there for a year, he was never playing for Arsenal again.”

However, Merson is of the belief that Wilshere is the best midfielder Arsenal have on its book and that he would have been an upgrade to the options we had last year.

“He [Wenger] is saying he’s world class because he wants another £5m or so for him. But Arsenal haven’t got anybody like Jack Wilshere in their team, not one player. I think the kid’s got a lot to offer. If he played ten times for Arsenal this year, he’d be better than the players they’ve got.”

Obviously, it is not because of talent that Wilshere’s future is in doubt but it is his inability to stay fit. Same thing happened with Abou Diaby and we were forced to sell him after he failed to put his injury troubles behind him. Nobody had envisaged Wilshere ending up like the French man, it’s a sad thing if he leaves this way.
