He’s been widely rumoured as one of those on Arsenal’s radar since last summer window and his Dutch Nationality has seen him linked with joining Louis can Gaal at Manchester United as well.
Both teams have an untouchable galaxy of forward attacking players but have appeared desperately mediocre in defence at times and the 23-year old has been fancied as being good enough to boost any one of Arsenal or United.
Virgil Van Dijk has spent three seasons with Celtic, scooping three Scottish Premiership titles on the row, while appearing regularly in the Champions League with famous nights like their win against Barcelona two seasons ago. However, a potential move to England appeals to him and would take him to the next level in his career.
“It would be a boost for my career if I could make a step up, but I have no problem if I remain a little longer in Scotland” Van Dijk, according to the Telegraph.
“Perhaps in the summer something happens”
While United can boast of Chris Smalling, Phil Jones, Jonny Evans, Marcos Rojo and Daley Blind as recognized first team players who can play center half, Mertesacker and Koscielny are our only real players in that role even if we’ve used Debuchy, Monreal and Calum Chambers there. Van dijk is a natural center-half and he can also play as a defensive midfielder.
At Arsenal, Van Dijk would only be rivaled by Olivier Giroud and Per Mertesacker in height at 6ft 4, giving us the much needed physical presence we seem to lack in defence. Though yet to win to make his debut with the Oranje, the 23-year old product of Groningen still has a lot of football in him to establish him as one of the strongest defenders of his generation. Unlike his fellow Dutchman, Ron Vlaar, who’s continued to be linked with us, Van Dijk still has the potential to improve important aspects of his game, while being more likely to play to instruction and in collaboration to his older teammates.
What is certain, though, is that we will not wait till the summer to add defenders to our team and if we had to, perhaps we should set our sights on more renowned top class talents, with no disrespect to Van Dijk. The likes of Hummels and Sergio Ramos could be available in the summer and those should be the class of additions we should be looking forward to in the summer. That is not to say we could not still take a chance of the young Dutch star as he could show great improvement but it just seems this winter would be the ideal time to sign him.
He’s once hailed us as an “amazing club” but we wouldn’t be going for him just to do his career a favour. It’s either he’s the ideal and perfect addition cum-competition to what we already have, or we continue our search.
