Last season breakout star Alex Iwobi has revealed the club almost released him in his early days as a footballer.
Iwobi who was promoted to the Gunners first team at the beginning of last season played an important part in the Gunner’s season including featuring in the second leg Champions League round of 16 match against Barcelona.
The midfielder went on to feature in 21 games across all competitions and he has now revealed he wouldn’t have had the opportunity to do so had he suffered disappointment in his early days.
“Well, I was on trial at six, and I think I was eight when I signed. I nearly got released when I was 13 or 14, so back then I really didn’t think I would make it here,” he told the club’s official website, as quoted by Squawka.
“There was a stage when I wasn’t playing up above my age group, but all the better players were. I questioned myself a lot at that age about whether I was good enough, but I eventually got through it.
“They did keep me on and I guess since then that’s when I really kicked on. I played in the Nike Cup (youth tournament) shortly after that, and then England called me up and things started moving.”
Iwobi scored two goals and provided two assists in the league last season as he earned his first cap for the Nigeria national team.
