With reports that Manchester United have tampered with our discussions over a Khedira move, Wenger will now turn his attention to another Real Madrid defensive midfielder Asier Illaramendi, per the Daily Star, albeir on a temporary basis.
The 24 year old midfielder has not held down a regular starting berth at the capital since his mega money move from Real Sociedad last year. Like Khedira, Illara has had to rely on cameos from the bench as the only way of featuring in the team, getting starts only in the Copa del Rey and ‘less’ important League games. Ancelotti has publicly stated that the club will do as much as possible to hold on to Khedira by offering him a new deal, but he has not been heard as making any keen statements as it concerns Illara.
Illaramendi is barely a little over a year into the six-year deal he signed with Madrid upon joining them from Sociedad, and it may so not appear that they will be keen to break ties with him on a permanent basis. Being spanish – infact, the most expensive spanish player even signed to the Bernabeu club – Illaramendi, with other players like Dani Carvajal, Isco Alarçon and Jesse Rodriguez, is seen as part of the core of the future of the club, to grow as one of the mainstays of the club in years to come as the likes of Iker Casillas and Sergio Ramos have been over the past decade.
It is on this premise that it is believed that a loan application for him would not only be of benefit to the club taking him, but to the player so as to get ample first team opportunity, ultimately favouring Real in having a real quality player for the future.
Illara’s composure as a defensive midfielder is easy to appreciate when one sees him on the ball, a role which he fulfilled so well, forming one of the core foundations of Real Sociedad’s team in the 2012/2013 La Liga season, with our old boy Carlos Vela, which saw them finish fourth, subsequently earning a Champions League group stage spot for the first time in ten years.
A loan deal for Illara should make as much sense for Wenger. Fresh and eager to play, he must be a more mobile option to Arteta and more suited to the technical demands of our game than Flamini. Rather than tarry and tire on Khedira, it is wise to shift to Illara, even if it were for half a season. He could work out so well that we get to keep him for a little longer.
