Arsenal have been dealt a setback in the race to sign AS Roma defender Kostas Manolas, according to reports.

Wenger is believed to be keen on bolstering his centre back options as he searches for a new man to partner Laurent Kolscieny in the heart of the defense next term.

The Gunners were in advanced talks with Olympiakos to sign the defender for £8m in 2014 before Roma tabled a superior bid to lure the defender to Rome, according to football insider via the Daily Express.

According to the same publication, Arsenal have now renewed their interest in signing the Greek international this summer who is now valued at about £30m.

But according to Transfermarketweb via the Daily Star, Roma have offered the defender a new deal that will increase his salary to £35,000 until 2021.

Rivals, Chelsea, who recently confirmed former Juventus boss Antonio Conte are also reported to be very interested in the defender who they see as a successor to John Terry.

Both clubs are now set to be disappointed with recent developments and would have to turn their attentions elsewhere.
