Arsenal have been cleared to complete the signing of Alessio Romagnoli from AS Roma, with the club preferring to sell him to the Gunners over direct rivals AC Milan, according to reports.
Romagnoli who spent last season on loan at Sampdoria has reportedly been the subject of three bids – all from AC Milan, with the latest being a €25million bid.
Roma on the other hand, has refused to come down from their £24.4million valuation of the left footed centre-back, prompting a withdrawal from Milan with Galliani stating that no further bids would be made.
Arsenal however, entered the race to sign the 20-year-old last week, with reports suggesting Roma’s sporting director Walter Sabatini has flown to England to discuss with Arsenal’s board over his transfer.
Romagnoli is expected to leave Roma this summer, and though Milan may attempt a higher bid, Roma won’t want to strengthen a rival club, and would instead sell to Arsenal who view the youngster as a long term replacement for Per Mertesacker.
This deal would be a surprise though, considering the number of centre-backs Arsenal currently have within their ranks.
