Arsenal are preparing a double swoop for Sporting Lisbon midfielders William Carvalho and Gelson Martins, according to reports.
Arsene Wenger has decided to make a change to his transfer policy this summer and for the first time in many years, the boss is prepared to spend big.
Alexandre Lacazette is set to announced as the club’s second summer signing for a club record fee but that is not all Wenger has up his sleeves.
According to Portuguese newspaper A Bola via The Daily Cannon, Arsenal are ready to spend £70m on Carvalho and Martins.
Martins, 22, a winger by trade is regarded as one of Portugal’s brightest talents and was impressive for Sporting throughout last season. His tally of six goals and 14 assists in 32 league appearances has placed him on the radar of top clubs and Manchester United were linked with him in January.
But Wenger is lining him up to replace contract rebel Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain or Theo Walcott who could leave Arsenal this summer as Arsene prepares to revamp him squad ahead of the new season.
Carvalho is also another highly rated Portuguese youngster and is a familiar name to Gooners. He has been consistently linked with Arsenal over the years and with his versatility in defensive midfield and attacking midfield, his position is one area Wenger is looking to strengthen with the fresh injury blow to Santi Cazorla.
Both players will be great signings not just for the present but the future of the club if Wenger is able to lure them over.
A £70m move for the duo will take the club’s expenditure past the £100m mark including Lacazette.
