Arsenal have been handed a massive blow in the pursuit of Real Madrid Star according to Daily Star.
Arsenal’s chase for Real Madrid striker, Karim Benzema, has taken a big hit as the player has reportedly agreed a move to Anfield.
Arsene Wenger has had the need to strengthen the team in attack for a while now and with the acquisition of Welbeck, it appears the hunt may have mellowed to an extent, hence allowing Brendan Rodgers to make the move for the player. Reports say the fee will be about £38.8 million, which is considerably more than what Madrid paid Lyon in for the French International in 2009. Sources say there have been talks between the Liverpool manager with the powers at the Capital club and there appears to be a gentleman’s agreement that the player will be allowed to discuss personal terms.
It has never been a secret that Benzema is one of Wenger’s most admired strikers and has been keeping track of the player since his days at Lyon, waiting for the right opportunity to pounce. The striker’s move to Real Madrid has seen his status amongst the World’s elite league of feared forwards somewhat reduced with all the focus being on Cristiano Ronaldo and, more recently, Gareth Bale. Though with an impressive goal average for the Los Blancos having netted 113 goals in 243 appearances, he still remains undervalued at the Santiago Bernabeu, prompting the interest of many clubs.
Liverpool have been on the lookout for a marquee striker to replace Luis Suarez who they lost to Barcelona in the summer. Arsene Wenger passed up the chance to sign up Mario Balotelli this summer despite various reports which had given strong indications that the deal was almost certain to happen. Brendan Rodgers made the move for the striker after Arsene beat Liverpool to Alexis Sanchez whom they had hoped would be part of the Suarez deal. However, the maverick Italian has yet to live up to his #16m transfer from AC Milan, while Daniel Sturridge still bears injury concerns.
With both clubs fighting for the title as well as aiming for extended and successful runs in the Champions League, there will be a need for pretty large squads to supplement for injuries. Arsenal already have Olivier Giroud out until the New Year, while others like Debuchy and now Mesut Ozil are long-term absentees from other departments of the team.
Meanwhile, Wenger may find solace in another Frenchman if he eventually misses out on Benzema, with reports that an approach is in the works for Marseille striker Andre-Pierre Gignac. The big Number 9 has been in scintillating form for the Stade de Velodrome outfit, netting 12 times in just 9 games. The player is said to be inclined to make the move away from France to establish himself at a top club where he can show his ability to compete for places in the French team, against the likes of Loic Remy, Olivier Giroud and Karim Benzema.
