According to Express, Bayern Munich’s outcast forward, Xherdan Shaqiri looks set to move to England, but it will not be to London, as reports have it that Liverpool have beat us to the agreement of a deal.
The 23-year old Yugoslav-born star has been on the fringes of Pep Guardiola’s team this season and it is understood the Bundesliga Champions have invited bids for him, having been deemed surplus to requirement. Liverpool have been one of many rivals in England and Europe to get to him; and The Express believe Brendan Rodgers’s side have gone ahead of the pack, even trumping Roberto Mancini’s big wage package for him.
Shaqiri was one of the stars of the World Cup, being one of few players to score a hat-trick at Brazil. He was one of Liverpool’s targets in the summer as they went about the revamp of their team to find replacements for Luis Suarez. Brendan Rodgers is regarded as a keen admirer of Shaqiri and had made efforts to sign him before the transfer window slammed shut on September 1. Wenger has had his eyes on a number of possible additions to bolster the energy levels of the attacking aspects of the team, and there are fewer youngsters in Europe who show as much oomph as the Swiss International.
It’s too early to query the Arsenal board about no one walking yet as a new player but the concession of another target to a fellow rival will surely get us thinking what plans the club actually have for the winter business. Shaqiri’s physique and power makes him a good fit for the Premier League as his able to hold off challenges from defenders while being a very fiery prospect for goalkeepers with his usually accurate shots. His energy would be a complement to the vivacity of current Arsenal man of the moment, Alexis Sanchez.
Liverpool will be giving us a dose of our pill by pulling off the signing of Shaqiri although a comparison with Alexis will be to overstep the bounds of reasonable analysis. That said, the youngster is still one of the most exciting players in Europe and his performances at Basel were the indications of what a player he could become.
