With none of their summer transfer targets really clicking, especially on the attacking front, Liverpool are reportedly cooking up a mammoth offer for one of Wenger’s long-term admires, Karim Benzema according to Express.
Brendan Rodgers’s side will welcome us on Sunday, and may be expected to play Tuttosport’s 2014 Golden Boy, Raheem Sterling as the most advanced attacking player, portraying their lack of firepower in the eventuality of Luis Suarez’s summer departure and Daniel Sturridge’s injuries. The Kop boss has openly admitted to regretting the club’s inability to lure Alexis Sanchez to Merseyside in the summer and may now look to make up for that by snapping up one of those who have been linked to a Gunners move, a staggering £50m payloader being readied.
Benzema was one of the most impressive strikers in Europe this season, playing a crucial part in Real Madrid’s current 21-game winning run in all competitions. He was one of the most mentioned names when we had the need to strengthen the team in attack, especially last season. With the acquisition of Welbeck, it appears the hunt may have mellowed to an extent, hence allowing Brendan Rodgers to make the move for the player. Sources say there have been talks between the Liverpool manager with the powers at the Capital club and there appears to be a gentleman’s agreement that the player will be allowed to discuss personal terms.
It has never been a secret that Benzema is one of Wenger’s most admired strikers and has been keeping track of the player since his days at Lyon, waiting for the right opportunity to pounce. The striker’s move to Real Madrid has seen his status amongst the World’s elite league of feared forwards somewhat reduced with all the focus being on Cristiano Ronaldo and, more recently, Gareth Bale. Though with an impressive goal average for the Los Blancos, he still remains undervalued at the Santiago Bernabeu, prompting the interest of many clubs.
Liverpool have been on the lookout for a marquee striker to replace Luis Suarez who they lost to Barcelona in the summer. Arsene Wenger passed up the chance to sign up Mario Balotelli this summer despite various reports which had given strong indications that the deal was almost certain to happen. Brendan Rodgers made the move for the striker after Arsene beat Liverpool to Alexis Sanchez whom they had hoped would be part of the Suarez deal. However, the maverick Italian has yet to live up to his £16m transfer from AC Milan, while Daniel Sturridge still bears injury concerns.
Real Madrid may not want to let Benzema go in the winter as they do not have any other top class proven striker, even if the burden of goals have lied with those behind him. However, a summer bid could be more feasible, and Arsenal can still be involved in the whole process depending on the performances of Giroud and Welbeck by the end of our season.
