Manchester City have gone ahead of Arsenal, Manchester United and Liverpool in the race for the capture of German attacking midfielder, Marco Reus.
The Dortmund super star is easily one of the most coveted players in World football today, attracting the interest of Europe’s big hitters over the past couple of seasons, with Real Madrid, Barcelona and Bayern Munich in the hunt with the four of the English Top 7.
Arsenal had been reported to be ahead in the race with Spanish tabloids fearing a move to North London in January was a high possibility.
However, recent reports according to the Daily Star are suggesting that City, who are known to do their business quietly and quickly, have began talks behind the scenes asking to be kept informed of developments with the player’s contract situation.
Reus has turned down an offer from Borussia Dortmund of an enlongated stay at the Wesfalenstadion as he is in the final periods of his current deal. A £20m exit clause becomes effective next summer, giving intersted buyers the opportunity to launch what would be an absolute steal of a deal.
Though not part of Joachim Loew’s World Championship conquerors in Brasil, the 25-year old Reus is regarded as one of the elite stars of the coming years, ready-made to take over the crowns from the likes of Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.
Real Madrid are particularly believed to be on the lookout already for suitable replacement for the now 29-year-old Ronaldo who, though still very much firing, may not take long to begin showing waning signs, amidst frustrations about mass sell outs as well as an SOS helicopter plea from Old Trafford.
However, Reus too wouldn’t want to be treated like the likes of Mesut Ozil, Gonzalo Higuain and Angel Di Maria who have been shown the door despite massive contributions to the successes of the club. He has always maintained his admiration for two teams in particular, who play the game according to his own liking, Arsenal the more ardent of the two to land his signature.
Arsenal will still be expected to make a serious bid for Reus, as it is believed there had been contacts made to that respect prior to the player’s pre-World Cup injury in May.
However, a bid from Arsenal should not take too long as sharp shooters – City could hand us a blow, as well as either of Manchester United and Liverpool in the English Premier League, also with the rest of the “big guns” in Europe also monitoring the situation with keen interest.
