Premier League trio of United, Arsenal and Liverpool have been dealt a shove by Bundesliga side Hoffenheim in the race to sign Stromsgodset starlet Martin Odegaard.
The ‘New Messi’ is the most coveted teenager in Europe with his dazzling style of play drawing comparisons with the little Argentine maestro. Odegaard is on the radar of nearly every top club in the world, but his perceived inclination towards the Premier League has always made it a possibility that he would choose to kick his career off in England.
However, the Germans also believe they stand a good chance of seducing him to the Deustchland, and Hoffenheim want to be considered serious contenders for his signature according to Daily Star.
“Martin Odegaard is very good,” Hoffenheim sporting director Alexander Rosen said.
“He is a phenomenon, but I seriously believe that we could be a very nice stepping stone for Martin.”
It’s a surprise that if any German club were to beat the Premier League to the wonderkid’s signature, it should not be Bayern or Dortmund as the youngster surely needs a pedestal where he can develop his game but at the same time have the best facilities and coaches available. Those are certainly qualities the Premier League’s big wigs can boast of as United, Liverpool and Arsenal have very good formation schemes that help bring future stars through to the top level.
Arsenal have been in the forefront of talent hunt and development in England and it has been one of the key legacies of Arsene Wenger’s eighteen year reign, which has seen him give many teenagers the opportunity to become full members of the first team, with Cesc Fabregas and Jack Wilshere as the most obvious shining examples.
Despite the interest of Hoffenheim, Odegaard is sure to still be monitored by the English clubs as he continues to grow and ascend the footballing heights, recently breaking a 104 year old record previously held by Tormond Kjellsen as youngest debutant for the Norwegian National team at 15 years and 253 days as well becoming the youngest player to feature in a EURO qualifier at 15 years and 300 days.
The youngster’s potential is one that could really explode if managed properly and under the right environment and training, as Lionel Messi had gained under the tutelage of Pep Guardiola at La Masia. United, Liverpool and Arsenal will continue to bring forth the records of their promotional success in terms of teenage prospects as the reasons why Odegaard shouldn’t disregard their offers, and by all indications, it would be the right option to see him sign for a club in England, where his qualities will be better groomed and appreciated.
