Manchester United, Arsenal and Liverpool are all looking to add more to their respective midfield ranks in the January window, but it does appear one of those additions won’t be 23-year old Christopher Kramer as the player already appears to have an agreement to join Real Madrid, according to Daily Star.
Kramer is currently on loan at Borussia Monchengladbach from Leverkusen, but owes the rise of his stock after a memorable World Cup, including a surprising starting role final against Argentina due to the injury suffered by Sami Khedira in the warm up.
The youngster is one of the most promising defensive midfielders emerging from Europe, and it will come as a blow to the Premier League trio that Madrid has moved ahead to scoop the much coveted lad.
Kramer had an impressive showing with Ozil and co at Brasil though he suffered a concussion in that final against Argentina, having to be replaced early in the first half.
He has, however, not made the consequent follow up in sustaining the confidence and glory gained to cement a spot in his BundesLiga team Bayern Leverkusen, being currently a loan spell at Borussia Monchengladbach.
Kramer is one of many German defensive midfielders to be linked with a likely switch to the Emirates over the past few months, though talks of Real Madrid’s Sami Khedira and Borussia Dortmund’s Lars Bender have somewhat cooled. While the other two surpass him in experience, Kramer had shown encouraging signs of a maturing force in that role during the fiesta in Brasil while his physical attributes make him most suited to that role.
Arsene Wenger is having a nightmare situation with his midfielders at the moment, with Ozil, Ramsey, Wilshere and Arteta nowhere to be found. While Arteta and Ramsey may return before the end of the transfers window, Wenger knows better than anyone the inevitable need to bring in one or more bodies in the middle of the park, with the intensity of the competitions to come after the New Year.
Emre Can, a young teammate of Kramer’s, was one of Brendan Rodgers’s summer acquisition which has failed to work out at Anfield, and it will come as a blow that he cannot get a grip on a more experienced German of the ilk of Kramer. Louis van Gaal has also been linked with Kramer, even as discussions with the representatives for Roma’s Kevin Strootman and Juve’s Arturo Vidal have failed to yield significant results yet.
With the midfielders currently available to Carlo Ancelotti at the Bernabeu, it could well be that one of their midfielders could be allowed to leave to accommodate Kramer’s arrival and that could still present either of the three clubs an opportunity to strengthen their teams. Khedira, Illaramendi, Isco?
