Sporting Lisbon midfielder William Carvalho is targeted Arsenal and Manchester United.
Arsenal and Manchester United defensive midfield summer target William Carvalho has expressed an interest in joining a Premier League club in future, with Arsenal a very possible destination.
The 22-year old Sporting Lisbon star, whose proposed £37 million move to Arsenal this summer fell through as the club apparently failed to meet his evaluation, has revealed that he has set his sights on turning out for a big club in England or Spain “sooner or later”. While not expressly being disappointed that the deal couldn’t happen, he is now focused on maintaining the focus of the spotlight on him so as to keep the big suitors interested in him, with the possibility of a big move still open.
The highly rated star was also marked by Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal as a summer target, to anchor the Red Devils’ ailing defensive midfield but a deal to secure the signature of Carvalho fell through. However it wont come as a surprise if United return for the player should the opportunity present itself.
In an interview with the official magazine of the Portuguese Football Federation, Carvalho said:
“I would not say I was disappointed [to stay], but despite being very happy at Sporting, we all have ambitions and I hope one day to be playing in the best leagues in the world, the English or Spanish”.
“It did not happen this year, but if I continue to do my job as I have been doing for sure that sooner or later it will happen”.
“I understand the proposals, but I think that there was no value for the clause and therefore they have been refused”.
Carvalho is regarded as having a very unique skill set that makes him a rare gem in his position. Tall, well-built and with an excellent football brain, the young lad is about as best as they come for the most imposing midfielders, having the reminiscence of Patrick Viera’s presence and the composure and pass-accuracy of Xabi Alonso. He did not have much in terms of game time to announce himself on a global scale at Brasil with Portugal’s early exit at the Group phase, but a consistent run with Sporting has gained him a lot of admirers across Europe.
Carvalho’s admission is sure to keep clubs on daily alert of his situation, and it does appear he may not actually be signing a long-term engagement with Sporting after all.
It is thought that Manchester United would make a move to land the tough tackling Portuguese again after failing to secure his services in the summer setting up a transfer battle with rivals Arsenal for his signature.
Arsenal’s need for a solution in defensive midfield is indeed one which cannot wait till another summer, requiring urgent attention in January. However, Carvalho is quite too good to be passed up as his kind are made maybe once in a decade.
We keep are fingers crossed. But this situation is nothing short of a transfer battle amongst the two sides in the coming transfer windows.
