Arsenal could be set for a January transfer set back as reports are suggesting that arch rivals Manchester United are plotting to steal long time Arsenal target.
Arsenal’s interest in Schalke hotshot Julian Draxler has got a bug on it, with United set to usurp Wenger to the youngster’s signature according to Metro.
The Daily Star reports that Louis van Gaal’s men have been negotiating, frequenting Gelsenkirchen in a bid to see that they out-bid Arsenal to one of our long term signings, with scouts monitoring the player. Arsenal have long been in the forefront in the pursuit of the highly rated 21 year old World Cup winner, the player himself admitting to an interest from the club over the past 12 months.
The reports have it that United are going to pay the £37m set in Draxler’s buy-out clause, perhaps the fee being too large in Wenger’s assessment during negotiations in January this year. This will come as a disappointment to most Arsenal fans as Draxler is quite an exciting future prospect. With a World Cup winners’ medal, the player’s confidence is just as high as his ability, and his potential going forward must be a plus to any team, even United.
It will also come as a shock to Gooners considering Draxler has often admitted his admiration for Arsenal, even admitting that he had wanted the Arsenal move when we made the enquiry earlier this year, but decided to continue his development at Gelsenkirchen. One probable reason was to be continually in the picture of National Team coach, Joachim Loew, to keep him within reach of a place in the World Cup squad. Having now achieved a World Cup medal, he may be ready to take his career to another level.
Though he made just one appearance in the Germans’ successful World Cup campaign, Draxler is amongst the next generation of stars from Germany who have been tipped to rule the football world in the coming years. A product of the Schalke youth system, Draxler has played all of his professional career to this stage Gelsenkirchen, with 16 goals in 105 League games since 2011. His frame and build, together with his pace and technical ability has endeared him to Wenger, and those qualities have seen Draxler earmarked as the one whom the manager intends to mould into the powerful striker of Henry’s calibre.
While we can boast of world class players in Ozil and Alexis, we certainly should not allow United to beat us to the improvement of our team with available stars. Many fans still believe we should have tried to rival them for Angel di Maria. Not that the former Real Madrid man has been better than Alexis by way of performance in the League this season, but we need to always take advantage of the opportunity to make our team stronger in depth and quality, to match Chelsea and City.
Draxler could still choose us over United based on what he’s said in the past, but as we know, players will go to the clubs who show strong interest in signing them.
