It’s going to be a blow, and one of a huge proportion, as we are about to be swept aside by United in the bid to sign Mats Hummels according to Daily Star.
Louis van Gaal has reportedly asked that the German World Cup winner be pursued by United’s chiefs towards a move in the summer, with a gigantic bid within the region of £47m touted as the offer been made.
The Old Trafford outfit have shared similar defensive worries as we this season, and have been mentioned in the same breath in the chase for defenders all through this season. United’s vice chairman, Ed Woodward, had said they will not be looking for short term fixes in January, but would rather acquire the players they want in the summer.
Arsene Wenger will be the unfortunate loser if Hummels were to establish an agreement with our rivals, especially if it all came down to the money as it is believed that we also do have the sort of money to compete on the market for the very top players when they are available. The signings of Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez were indicators of the financial muscle we’ve acquired over the years, giving us the ground to go for the best in the business to compliment our current squad.
And there is not a doubt that Hummels is a true World Class defender, unarguably the most coveted in Europe at the moment. After a starring role in Germany’s victorious voyage in Brazil, it is only normal that his value will reach towards the skies, especially as Dortmund are striving to see their best assets remain at the club a little longer. Being the captain now, his responsibility has even grown more within the Westfalenstadion.
The struggles of Klopp’s men in the Bundesliga this season appears to be the indicator that Hummesl could be on his way next summer. Five seasons of fellowship with the Yellow Wall has brought him much success and global acclaim as one of the best players in the world, but the future looks rather too opaque to make any judgement of thing being as good as they once were. This has invited the interest of the leading clubs around, especially Arsenal and United leading the chase from the Premier League.
Hummels could still have a say in the matter at the end of the day, if we did choose to match United’s bid. He will quickly settle into the squad with the help of the German teammates, plus the possibility of his current manager, Jurgen Klopp, being the one to take over from Arsene Wenger when the Frenchman calls time on his days at the Emirates.
