While much of the recent media goss involving Arsenal have revolved around the potential signing of Brazilian defender, Gabriel Paulista, the Gunners may have lost sight of another player from that South American country with Madrid reportedly reaching an agreement with Cruzeiro for young midfielder, Lucas Silva.
The 21-year old has been speculated as being on the radar of some European clubs but Arsenal and Madrid have been the most mentioned in connection with signing him, but despite Wenger making first contact with him some time towards the end of the past year, the player’s Father has now come out to state that his son looks set to join the Bernabeu club soon.
The Express quotes Miguel Vieira as the player’s father, who said:
“Luiz Rocha (Lucas Silva’s agent) called me today and told me that negotiations with Real Madrid are back underway, but he didn’t give me any more details.”
While this may appear a statement that suggests a wish rather than something already realized, some other reports today, according to the Daily Mail, have given weight to Lucas moving to Madrid by reporting a deal has actually been reached.
Another reports according to popular Spanish paper Marca, reported quotes made by the Vice President of Cruzeiro, Mario Rodrigues to ESPN Brazil:
“Lucas Silva’s transfer deal is official and a statement will be made on Thursday. The player has decided it’s time for him to leave,” Rodrigues told ESPN Brazil according to Marca.
“We won’t have any problem finding a replacement. Various reserve team players are ready to step up,” he continued.
The supposed statements of both Lucas’s father and the Cruzeiro VP would all but seal off any further approaches Arsenal may want to make towards the 21-year old, if they are true.
It is the understanding of most who follow the player that he has apparently always been inclined towards moving to Madrid but Arsenal’s interest was always open for discussion should a firm indication appear that Los Blancos would not be wanting him this January.
If Silva eventually signs for Madrid, it could open space for some players to become available for the Gooners to try and woo to the Emirates, especially Asier Illaramendi.
The former Sociedad midfielder has had a tough time having a firm foot in Carlo Ancelotti’s starting XI since moving from Anoeta to Madrid last season. There have been talks of a possible switch for him to Atletic Bilbao but it could be one of those whom the Gooners could land if a serious enquiry is made.
