Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur are set to go head to head in the race to sign Leicester City midfielder Riyad Mahrez, according to reports.
Mahrez wants to leave the King Power stadium this summer for a fresh challenge else where and has told his club he doesn’t intend to stay with them next season.
Since he made his decision public in May, a week hasn’t gone by without a Mahrez to Arsenal story, and this week’s episode is about competition for the winger’s signature.
According to a report in the Daily Cannon, Tottenham have now joined the race to sign Mahrez.
This comes few days after Roma dropped their interest in the midfielder because of Leicester’s reluctance to reduce their £50m valuation.
Arsenal were quoted the same price when the club inquired about Mahrez earlier in the transfer window, forcing Wenger to focus all his attention on Monaco’s Thomas Lemar.
Lemar is Wenger’s top target and Mahrez was only considered as an alternative but since it became obvious that both players will cost us around the same amount, Wenger has decided to concentrate on the French international, although there remains a possibility we will return for Mahrez.
Tottenham’s interest in Mahrez will now complicate things a bit for us, negotiations with Monaco over Lemar hasn’t made any progress and Wenger will be wary of missing out on both players now that Spurs are in the picture.
