Arsenal appears to have moved closer to the signing of long time target William Carvalho from Sporting Lisbon.
According to the Metro, the Gunners have been given the green light to finally capture the tough tackling midfielder with transfer talks reportedly underway with the Portuguese club.
Carvalho has been heavily linked to Arsenal over the last two transfer window, but the Gunners have on various occasions failed to reach a deal with Sporting Lisbon for the defensive midfielder.
Sporting had previously been holding out for a fee in the region of £30 million. However, popular Portuguese newspaper O Jogo says that Sporting are now willing to sell the player for a lesser amount than earlier requested.
The report also claims that negotiations between Arsenal and Sporting have been on and both clubs are close to an agreement with Sporting ready to sell the player for a cut price of £21.5 million.
Arsenal will be looking to provide support and competition for in-form Frenchman Francis Coquelin and so the signing of another defensive midfielder in Carvalho is regarded as vital, as Wenger prepares for the League title push next season.
Carvalho has also been heavily linked to Chelsea, Manchester United and Liverpool.
